The best part of Tropical adventures is that packing is light! Here are some of my go-to items for a sunny and water sport adventure.
- Day pack 16-30 liters Example 22 liter daypack)
- Hydration/Electrolyte tablets ( portable hydration tablets)
- Active swim suit like Athleta or Prana
- Beach towel (Quick Dry & Packable Beach Towel)
- Board shorts like Maui Rippers or any of the surf brand shorts
- Chacos or similar type water shoes that you can hike in and get wet
- UPF clothing. Uniqlo and Columbia have some great options
- Summer weight hiking pants – I like the half zip ones that turn into shorts. REI has petite options for the 5’4″ & under crowd.
- Lightweight rain coat that has good mobility for hiking/ zip lining etc.
- Lightweight polar fleece that dries quickly
- Sunscreen (travel size)
- Bug spray (travel size)
- Sunhat and/or visor
- Sunglasses
- A sundress
- Sarong or my favorite a Ripskirt Maui
- Fanny pack – waterproof
- Snorkeling gear – although you can always rent to save packing space
Purchasing gear for adventure travel can add up. Especially when you go from a cold climate to tropical climates. These are the sites that I find amazing deals on when shopping. Although, there is a benefit to shopping at REI . REI allows for returns up to 1 year even if the items are worn or used. It is a nice option when you decide after 3 wears a $200 backpack is not that comfortable, or a pair of hiking boots gives you blisters. They also have a membership for $20 that offers rewards and keeps your purchase history. However, for items that you know the brand, fit etc. these places will save you a good bit of money.
- Steap and Cheap powered by Backcountry – Basically the bargain bin. Remember to look at multiple sites for reviews if you are purchasing that brand or item for the first time. There is a reason it is in the bargain bin.
- Ebay I have purchased very expensive brands like Icebreaker, Patagonia and Columbia on Ebay at a fraction of the cost. If they are items you will only wear 1 or 2 times a year it makes sense. I have had great luck and the items arrive in great condition.
- There are even Facebook groups where people sell gently used clothing & gear. Just use the search function to find a group.
